all good things must end

this guy carved all the tikis that we brought home with us

here is Mr Windey deplaning as we return to Oahu for our last day in Hawaii

Kilauae at last!

this is a river of lava!

we tried to go on Sunday and were held back by an earthquake (6.7). So finally on Tuesday we made the 3 hour drive across the island (they call it the big island for a reason). Sometimes, it was so hot we had to move away from the flow. My shoes were ruined (read: melted). and it was totally amazing!

black sand beach

on the way to Kilauea, we stopped by what used ot be a town but is now a field of lava about 80 feet closer to the ocean than the town used to be. People place sprouted cocnuts on the beach to rejuvenate the coast and turn a barren lava field into a lovely beach.

Collapsed lava Tube

this tree is called a walking tree. When the forest grows thick and obsures light, it grows new roots in the direction of more light and abandons the roots on the darker side

Lava tree state park

on the way to see the volcano, we stopped off at Lava tree State park. About 15 years ago, a lava flow covered this forest. Instead of burning the trees as the lava ran through, it surrounded the trees and stuck to the bark. The eruption subsided, the lava flowed away, and left the smoldering trees encased in solid rock. pretty cool, huh?
